Chapter 17

Shim Changmin, Park Changmin

Yoochun is the fiancé of Changmin which was arranged by his grandmother and grandfather. Yoochun learned to know that he had been engaged verbally when he was 17, where Chagmin was 9 years-old. However, Changmin did not know that she was engaged to Yoochun because her parents did not know how to tell her since she was too young to learn such thing.

Yoochun’s grandmother was Changmin’s grandfather when they were back then in college together. But they were not able to be together since the parents of Yoochun’s mother wanted a rich son-in-law, while Changmin’s grandfather was from an ordinary family. After marriage, Yoochun’s grandmother immigrated to U.S because her husband had a business there, and she also had some relatives there. Yoochun’s great grandparents also immigrated to U.S with their only daughter. Changmin’s grandfather had got married after Yoochun had left Korea 5 years later. He got a beautiful and nice wife but she had leukemia, so she passed away after giving birth to the first and only son. Changmin’s grandfather had become a single father to raise his only son while Yoochun’s grandmother was having somehow happy family. Unfortunately, Yoochun’s grandfather had another relationship with other girl behind his grandmother, so the grandmother got furious and filed a complaint for divorce but Yoochun’s grandfather did not want that so they had to leave separately for 2 years in order to get divorce effective. After the divorce, Yoochun’s grandmother returned back to Seoul with her parents. It seemed the fate between Yoochun’s grandmother and Changmin’s grandfather had not reached it end, so eventually they had got to see each other again. They still remembered their promised of arranging their children to be couple if they were not the same gender. Regrettably, they both had sons. Due to the obsession to each other, they both still wanted their blood to together no matter what. Since ever after their second meeting, they had become best friends whom they could share all concerns and supports. And they brought their sons to get to know each other, which they eventually had become like brother to one another. Right after Changmin was born, which at that time Yoochun were 8 years-old, Yoochun’s grandmother and Changmin’s grandfather strongly urged both of them to get engaged. The parents of the both sides hesitated to accept that at all ebut one day of the last day of Yoochun’s grandmother because she had a car accident. Therefore, Yoochun and Changmin had become engaged on Yoochun’s 9th birthday.

Changmin’s grandfather as well as parents always lent supports to Yoochun’s family whenever they needed. Yoochun had a younger brother who was 2 years younger than him. Both Yoochun and Yoohwan liked Changmin lots, despite of not knowing about the engagement. Three years after the death of Yoochun’s grandmother, Yoochun’s parents received a letter telling that Yoochun’s grandfather had passed away because of brain cancer, and he wanted to Yoochun’s parents to take over his business. Hence, Yoochun’s family immigrated to U.S again but leaving contact to Changmin’s family, and they kept contacting each other via mail regularly, updating what were going about their lives here and there.

Changmin’s grandfather had passed away due to his heart disease when she was 5 years old. And Changmin’s father got assigned to work in U.S as a delegation several months after that Changmin’s grandfather passed away. Changmin’s parents immigrated to U.S but not in the same state as Yoochun’s family. Yoochun’s family was in Virginia, whereas Changmin’s family was in California. All the years during the mission, Changmin always hired a Korean teacher to teach her the Korean course at home after her regular class. So Changmin was able to read and write Korean very well as other Korean children in Korea. Changmin was a talent and genuine girl but very shy and quiet one.

Despite of living in different states, both families still kept in touch and once a year they would visit each other. Yoochun and Yoohwan were always happy seeing Changmin. They always liked Changmin the same as when they were back then in Seoul. They had said that Changmin would be the most beautiful and charming girl ever because she is pretty shy but very talented in many things. They also added that she would make a good wife for sure, and whoever the guy having her as a wife would be the luckiest guy.

Changmin’s father had finished his mission in California, and was assigned as a delegation again to Virginia. At that time, Changmin was 9 years-old. The second mission seemed longer than the first one, so Changmin’s family was thinking of settling physically there. In addition, Yoochun’s family was there too, so it seemed both family would be able to catch up more often. Changmin’s family had finally settled in the state in an apartment, somewhere not far from Yoochun’s family place but because during the first movement from California, they were pretty busy, and was not able to catch up with Yoochun’s family at the moment. After settling Changmin’s schooling and such, Yoochun’s and Changmin’s family finally had a formal meeting to discuss about random thing, and the engagement was also included there. Yoochun accordingly got to learn that he was engaged to Changmin verbally by his grandmother and Changmin’s grandfather. However, Changmin did not know at all.

Yoochun was taken aback after learning about his engagement. Actually, he had a girlfriend who was in the same school with him. But later, he accepted and committed to take care of Changmin after her parents passed away in a car accident. He remembered seeing Changmin trembling in the hospital and looked a like a mess. The angel that he hadn’t seen any flaw got lost and cried uncontrollably before him. He had tried all his best to comfort and make Changmin to move on. The first thing he did after he committed to take care of Changmin with his life was, he broke up with his girlfriend and told her the truth without any single hidden word. They eventually became friends and his ex-girlfriend told him that the feeling Yoochun had towards Changmin was the real and pure love. Yoochun had never thought that he really loved Changmin, he just thought that he had taken cared of Changmin because he felt the responsibility and sympathy he had towards her.

Ever since Changmin had come to live under one roof and used one family with Yoochun, which her real name was Shim Changmin but after her parents’ death, the Park got her to be an adopted daughter and made her use the same family name with them. Talking about Changmin, she was so grateful, and felt that she was beholden to the Park family. She had be an nice and obedient daughter to her parents, and she did the same to the Park. More specifically, Yoochun had given her all supports and time with all his might. She had nothing to ask for more from her so-called brother. But little did she know, Yoochun was literally a fiancé-brother to her. During the first time of moving in to the Park family, Yoochun spent his time sleeping in the room on the couch, watching her carefully. He was the one who wiped all the tears, and brought her smile. To her, Yoochun was somehow no different from a hero. She had become to a living person again because of him. He dropped her and picked her up from school every single day that she had class. He was there to be her friend when she continually had a Korean course such as culture, literature and history.

Yoochun was an overprotective fiancé-brother to Changmin. He never took risk to let Changmin from his sight, unless he was extremely busy. He would bring Changmin to amusement park and such to please her during weekend. He also brought her to his grandfather’s shop, everytime after his school. He also brought Changmin to his school party. All in all, Changmin was an inseparable existent to him. Yoochun did not allow Changmin to take taxi to school at all if he was not available. He would ask his parents, or Yoohwan to bring her to school or pick her up from school. The cause of this was Changmin used to take taxi from school one day that Yoochun was not available, and none of the family member was available. Changmin was driven into a different direction, which it seemed the taxi driver wanted to rob and rape her. Luckily, Changmin was smart enough to get rid of the guy by running into some people’s house. And since the day of the incidence happened, Yoochun swore on his life to never let Changmin take any taxi ever again.

The park loved and took care of Changmin as their own daughter, and they could never be any happier seeing Yoochun paying all his attention to Changmin. They knew their son was deeply in love with Changmin already but what they worried about was whether or not Changmin could accept this. From day to day, they could see that Yoochun were getting into deeper feeling, which they were afraid that it would be a big pain for him in the future if thing would not go as they wanted.

When Yoochun reached his age of 20, and Changmin reached her age of 12, the great grandparents of Yoochun wanted to get back to Korea since they thought that they would not be able to live any longer. The only wish they had was to get back to their home-country and died there. Yoochun’s parents decided to move back to Korea, and Yoohwan also came along. Only Yoochun and Changmin were left there in U.S since Yoochun had to finish his architecture course, and Changmin was in second year of middle school. They thought that if Yoochun could finish his course in U.S, then it would be a great potential for him to find a good job in Korea. And same as Changmin which was in second year of middle at that time, it would be a good idea to bring her at that time; it would be better to let her finish middle school, then she could start high school in Korea. According to Changmin’s age, she was not supposed to be in second year of middle school yet but because she was genuine student, she could skip the grade effortlessly during her primary school. The great grandparents of Yoochun had passed away one after resettling themselves in Korea due to their oldness.

Yoochun and Changmin apparently lived under one roof, which it had become the full responsibility of Yoochun to take care of his princess. And Changmin had eventually become the one who cooked for Yoochun sometimes when he was too busy in college. By the time, Yoochun finished his college and Changmin finished her middle school, they decided to move to Korea while sometime back then Yoochun thought of living there alone just the two of them but seeing their parents got older and older from year to year, Yoochun decided to come back to a home-country where he almost could not remember anything about it. Yoochum had left the task of taking care of his grandfather with his older cousin, and their mansion was put under rental. Yoochun brought Changmin to her parents’ as a goodbye before getting back to Korea. He also brought Changmin to bid goodbye to his ex-girlfriend because Changmin had treated her as an older sister. Before coming back to Korea, Yoochun already applied and got an offer to work in one International Company in Korea as an architect.

After getting back to Korea, Yoochun still did the same to Changmin as back then in U.S such as dropping her at school, picking her up, and bringing her for driving around whenever he felt he had enough energy for his princess. More importantly, he had become more overprotective to his princess by never letting Changmin going anywhere alone without him or his family member, unless none was available.
