More Canadian parents opting for home schooling their children; 29 per cent increase between 2007 and 2012
Source: Fraser Institute

n increasing number of Canadian families are choosing to home school their children, according to a new study released today by the Fraser Institute, an independent, non-partisan Canadian public policy think-tank.

The study, Home Schooling in Canada: The Current Picture—2015, notes that 21,662 Canadian children were registered as ‘home school students’ (with likely more not officially registered) in 2012, an increase of 29 per cent over a five-year period.

The study references the mounting academic literature about home schooling across North America and builds upon earlier Fraser Institute research from 2001 and 2007. It finds that while decisions to homeschool in the past were ideologically or religiously driven, families are now choosing the option for more pragmatic reasons.

For example, parents are choosing education-at-home because it corresponds with their…

More female teachers doesn’t mean more female principals and more (new insights from TALIS2013)

From experience to meaning...

I just found out via a tweet by Dirk Van Damme (@VanDammeEDU) that there is a new Teaching in Focus based on the report New insights from TALIS 2013: Teaching and learning in primary and upper secondary education which presents an overview of teachers and teaching in primary and upper secondary education for a sample of countries that participated in the OECD Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) in 2013.

What are the two main insights?

  • Women represent the majority of the teaching workforce for most countries at all levels of education. Despite this and the fact that most principals are former teachers, significantly fewer principals are women at all education levels.
  • Primary teachers tend to work in schools where principals report material and personnel shortages that hinder the delivery of quality education more often than upper secondary teachers. Moreover, schools with high proportion of socio-economically disadvantaged students face…

Sex and Human Trafficking

Marketing Jewels

For starters, how WEIRD is it that “trafficking” is spelled like it is…just seems awkward to me.  But on a second (and much more important) note, how crazy-wonderful it is to see an advertisement about human trafficking in an airport, above the escalators at the parking garage, for all to see. Thank you, OHare and the Blue Campaign for raising awareness of this degrading and all-too-common issue.

It’s time to make it stop, and to release women and children who are victims and have nowhere to go for help. They deserve better. They are loved and valued, and trafficking doesn’t just eat at their bodies-it eats at their souls and hearts. Let’s help them. Please. Can you imagine being a toddler, and being sexually abused/raped? That’s when it often starts, and those children grow up, thinking that it’s normal. We even hear reports of them being kept in cages and…

More inhibition improves idea generation (study)

From experience to meaning...

Tougher situations make you more creative? It seems so, if you look at this study by Radel et al. The study was based on a double-blind, randomized, counterbalanced, crossover experimental design. It’s a bit of a difficult paper to read when you’re not an expert in the field, but in summary:

  • The role played by the inhibition function in creativity was examined.
  • Inhibition capacity was manipulated through prolonged practice of a conflict task.
  • Impaired inhibition led to improved fluency, originality and a hyper semantic priming.
  • These results suggest that impaired inhibition favor idea generation.

This last element is important to note, in line with previous studies a different pattern of results is found for divergent and convergent creativity tasks. The effects the fluency and originality scores in the test used suggest that only idea generation processes benefit from a depletion of the resources for inhibition.

Abstract of the study:

There is now…
